Memorial Presentation Sheets — History, Provenance and the Definitive Census

The historical journey
The Heydrich Block did not appear in isolation. Follow the sequence of people, events, ceremonies and surviving records that led to the presentation sheets of June 1943.
Reinhard Heydrich's rise, Prague, and the occupation machinery that forms the historical setting for the object.
Gabčík and Kubiš attack Heydrich at the Vychovatelna bend. Photographs, maps and surviving evidence reconstruct the event and its immediate aftermath.
Heydrich's death was followed by state ceremony, propaganda and a memorial programme whose documentary traces survive in archives and photographic sequences.
Prague Castle ceremonies and the first-anniversary programme provide the setting in which the serial-numbered presentation sheets were distributed.
Presentation sheets, numbered envelopes, certificates, auction records and photographs now allow individual examples to be traced through time.
From the research · selected evidence
This is the official promotional website for The Heydrich Block. A small selection of documents, photographs and presentation sheets introduces the evidence and subjects explored more fully in the book.
“Previously unpublished photographs. Recovered archival records. Surviving objects.”
Selected research discoveries, publication news and representative images from the book will be highlighted here as the project approaches publication, including archival photographs recovered after more than two decades of research and not previously published where that status can be documented.

What this project is
The Heydrich Block is a book and continuing research project devoted to the individually numbered 1943 memorial presentation sheets.
The research follows the evidence from historical context to the object itself: portrait source, design, manufacture, numbering, distribution, recipients, envelopes, surviving examples and postwar provenance.
Its emphasis is new, documented material: archival discoveries, original photographs, institutional records and surviving objects not previously brought together in one reference.
Why it is different
More than twenty years of research has recovered rare institutional records and archival photographs, including previously unpublished images where first-publication status can be verified.
Serial numbers, envelopes, printing, certificates and ownership history.
Known examples reconciled across collections, auctions and archives.
Images from the research
Selected original photographs and contact sheets introduce the documentary record examined in the book. Some have emerged from more than twenty years of research and appear to be previously unpublished; first-publication status is stated only where it can be established from the surviving record.
Among the material under study are photographs of the 1943 memorial programme, including registration and distribution scenes whose exact activities are being tested against captions, archival records and surviving objects. Where first-publication status can be established, individual photographs will be identified accordingly.
